What is a psychologist?
Psychology is the study of the human mind, emotions, and behaviors. A psychologist diagnoses problems of the mind with assessments, evaluations, and testing. In addition to an undergraduate degree, psychologists have advanced doctorate of psychology degrees and complete 1,750 hours of clinical supervision.
Psychologists treat mental health conditions with variations of psychotherapy and behavioral adjustments and coaching. Psychologists don’t prescribe medication but do collaborate with psychiatrists and other physicians to help you get the right medication to manage your symptoms.
What does a psychologist do?
At the Soho Center For Mental Health Counseling & Clinical Supervision, the licensed psychologist provide expert psychological testing and evaluation as well as psychotherapy sessions.
Psychological testing identifies the emotional and behavioral symptoms and signs of a variety of mental health conditions. The tests may include formal questionnaires or checklists, interviews, observational data, and a review of medical records.
The tests and evaluations help form diagnoses for patients of all ages that can inform individualized education programs in schools or treatment plans for adult patients who have lost their quality of life due to their mental health. Psychological assessments are also required before you can be cleared for certain surgical procedures such as bariatric surgery or spinal procedures.
Psychological testing isn’t like the tests you took at school. Your psychologist isn’t looking for right or wrong answers; they’re measuring your cognitive and emotional abilities and screening for signs that can inform your diagnosis.
How can a psychologist help me improve my mental health?
Psychologists offer customized treatment plans to help restore your mental health and wellness. They collaborate with your psychiatrist or another physician to combine medication — when relevant to your treatment — and provide both individual and group psychotherapy sessions.
Like other mental health therapists and counselors, psychologists are committed to helping you identify and resolve the issues that are disrupting your wellness. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to psychology, but you can count on a safe environment to explore your thoughts and feelings and learn techniques to choose healthier behaviors.
